Hi to all. I am new and look forward to getting to know other counselors and therapists. I have a question for the counseling community. If you are licensed in only one state, can you have an online service that caters to people anywhere in the United States. I would like to have an online counseling practice, but I am unclear if I can legally practice to everyone if I am only licensed in North Carolina. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Forgivenessguru,
Welcome to the boards! I did want to let you know though, that with the exception of Shrinklady, whose website this is, the rest of us are clients,
not health professionals. Although some people have been working towards a degree no one that I know of is currently a practicing therapist. It would be great to hear about things from the other side!

Hi forgivenessguru, interesting name. Smiler

That's an interesting question that you have and I have seen some online counseling sites that seem to be open to anyone no matter where they are from,

I would assume its legal because the person is practicing from their computer in their state.. where they are liscensed from.... where the client comes from doesn't seem to matter at this time.

I would think that www.apa.org would have accurate information on this.

Im sure some ethical concerns would exist but technology seems to fly ahead of ethics at the time.... Smiler

Anyways, thats just my guess but I wouldn't actually know the logistics. Like AT said, None of us that I know here with the exception of the site owner, Shrinklady are liscensed mental health professionals.

hope you stay anyways. Smiler

Welcome

Also Shrinklady is from Canada, so it might be different than in the states...

Thank you, Attachment Girl, for letting me know. I thought it was a mixed group. Anyway, thank you to Butterfly Warrior and The Dude for giving me some direction.
