Share, connect, and learn.
Hi, everyone,
As you know, Armored Heart has been generous in sharing what has been beneficial in her own therapy. The recent DBT suggestions she shared (did I get that right, AH?) prompted me to share an acronym I created for myself years ago, when I was suffering with frequent negative thoughts and dissociation. I used this for a long time; gradually my symptoms subsided significantly.

So, this is what I wrote in my journal:

...How can I counter these feelings? Counter. Interesting word. My feelings count and I don't want them to take me to the ER.

C--Comfort myself. Think about recent pleasant exchanges and events.

O--Opportunity to learn and gain insight about myself through reflection.

U--Unity with the people I care about--my "team."

N--Now is the time to deal with it.

T--Treasure sensory experiences, especially beauty and pleasure. Stay with self.

E--Embrace reality. Stay oriented through brief mental life summary.

R--Reach out to others. Life's meaning is in the sharing and giving.

There you have it. A slightly different version is on AH's thread. I hope someone finds this beneficial. RT, thank you for the suggestion to create a new thread, and everyone, please add your own helpful acronyms if you would like.

You're very welcome, Lucy.

I just want to add how I used it, if that wasn't clear:

1. I'd start to have overwhelming feelings, or I would start to dissociate (or both.)

2. I would remember the word "counter."

3. I would mentally go through the list of self-soothing and connecting that are spelled out in the acronym.

4. By the end, I would be in much better shape. I can't remember a time when this didn't help me, and sometimes it made it possible for me to stay in a public or crowded place I would have had to have left, in the past.

Looking forward to hopefully learning some new useful acronyms here. Smiler
This isn't an original. It's said a lot around the tables at 12-step meetings.

H.A.L.T.

H - Hungry
A - Angry
L - Lonely
T - Tired

It's a reminder that if you're having any of these feelings, you need to pay attention and take care of yourself. Getting overwhelmed with these four things puts you in a very vulnerable position for things to go downhill. So intervene with yourself before you're feeling all of them. HALT.

Hunger - nutritionally and also emotionally. basic needs

Anger - tho not either good or bad, it needs to be expressed - and constructively, not destructively

Loneliness - are you isolating yourself? reach out.

Tired - overloaded and overwhelmed? time for some self care
