Hi
Do any of you have children and work? Do any of you have a situation where you have to find someone to drop off or pick up your kids from school due to your work schedule? How does it work for your family?

I was informed this morning by my parents that they will not be picking up my children after school next year. They said it's too hectic, so I have to find some other arrangement.

A bit of background....I am a divorced/single mom of two (one in middle school and one in elementary school). I live with my parents, go to school full time, and work part time. My children actually go to school outside the school district we live in, so transportation is the responsibility of the parents/guardians (ie no school busing option). When I discussed with my parents several years ago my wanting to go back to school, they said that they would be willing to help me care for my children while I attended school and work. That was huge and I was so grateful to hear them say that! They help out a ton and I am still grateful! I pay my parents rent to live here and I pay them a small fee for getting my children in the afternoon after school. My parents are now saying that even with the fee it's too hectic and they just aren't able to handle it next year.
Currently, my job is up in the air and I have no idea if I'm being hired on and what hours I will work. Also, for school I'm suppose to be doing field work in a clinic somewhere in the area in the fall and that's not set in stone either, so I don't know when or where I'll be doing that.
I guess I'm freaking out this morning. I thought that at least having my parents pick up my kids was something that I could count on, but I guess not.

Anyway, I was just wondering what others do with their kids. Carpool? After school care for young kids?

Those are great ideas!

I think I'll have to look into after school care program for my younger child. That isn't an option for my older one, I don't think. I think for him I might have to look into the city bus route. I've seen a city bus at the school...I just don't know where they go from the school.
My parents and I live too far away for the kids to walk safely (across a highway and such).
Another thing is money. At my current job, I only make $10 an hour (works out to be less than $7,500 a year) and I pay for school and textbooks out of pocket. I do get some child support money from ex-husband, but that's not much. I'm on govt. assistance for health care. If I change my job, I more than likely get kicked off of govt. health care and I have to get my child support recalculated (more than likely meaning less money there), so sometimes I feel stuck in this weird socio-econ status that I'm not used to yet.
Ok...I went off on a tangent. I apparently have a lot on my mind today and no one to talk with.
I wish I had a therapy session soon. Thank God that's free through my school tuition!
