Hi Everyone! I am new here. Well, technically. I normally just read everyones' posts and comments seeking solace in the fact that I can relate to so many others all while remaining silent. Heh. Well, recently I have been struggling with something and I am finding I finally need to turn to others, you, for support and advice.

Okay, here it goes. I have been in therapy for about eight months now. I was in therapy for about a year's time as a teenager in which I received a diagnosis by the psychiatrist there. That was over seven years ago. While I am sure the diagnosis may still be accurate, I am unaware as to whether my current therapist has kept the same diagnosis (I told her what I was diagnosed with) or if she has changed it, or even diagnosed me with something else. I had seen a book in her office periodically about treating borderline personality disorder, and have recently seen it on her bookshelf. I cannot help but automatically assume that she has that book because of me. After doing some informal research on BPD, I cannot help but spot some vague similarities.

Now, with all of that said, how do I go about bringing this up to my therapist? Should I flat out ask her if she has that book because of me? Should I blatantly ask her what she has diagnosed me with? What have you guys done and how have your therapists reacted if you have asked for a diagnosis or such?

Hello Krimpet welcome to the forum!

You don’t say what your original dx was - but I gather from your mentioning the book your T has that you have been labelled BPD? Or something similar?

For what it’s worth I’ve never had a formal diagnosis (and there are times I’d have loved to have at least a name for what I go through, just to give me something concrete to relate to) - but it sounds like the best thing you could do right now is to ask her pointblank whether she has an actual diagnosis of you, or at least ask her outright whether she believes you might have BPD. There’s no harm in asking but plenty of anxiety if you keep this to yourself.

I think there is another thread on here about asking for dx from therapists - I gather the usual response is much along the lines of NOT giving a categorical answer (actually I’m not sure that psychotherapists do give diagnoses, that seems to be the preserve of psychiatrists? Or maybe it’s different in the States where insurance requires formal dx?)

I hope you can resolve this soon though, it sounds as if it’s worrying you how she views you.

Welcome again

Hello Krimpet,

I would definitely ask her. Nothing wrong with that. Tell her you noticed her book and it made you start wondering... I'm one of those who think patients shouldn't hold/hide anything from their T.

Nothing wrong with asking a T their dx, although some disorders, such as BPD or even BiPolar disorder can be really hard to diagnose, or should I say really easy to misdiagnose.
I would just ask her straight out. I am diagnosed Borderline Personality and we talk about it openly in session. I have had that diagnosis for 10 years from my original therapist and psychiatrist but when I started with a new therapist I just asked her what she thinks my diagnosis is and we discussed. It made me feel better to get it out in the open and talk about it instead of just wondering
