My Pdoc gave me a report to send to the hospital with the intake forms. Usually his reports go to T and she just summarizes them to me. I read this one and there was a comment that I don't understand. He said that I was "harboring the analytic fallacy of the essential flaw" with respect to my illness. I don't understand what that means. Any one have any ideas?

My thoughts are not based on any psychoanalytic readings but instead on my general understanding of fallacy so I may be completely off.

A fallacy is an error in reasoning or a error in an argument. I think he is saying that you believe that there is an essential flaw that is causing your illness. I don't know if he means that you think that you have an essential flaw or that you think that there is one single cause of your illness. Could you ask him what he meant? I think he is the only one who can answer you for sure.
Hi Jillian,

"Analytic fallacy" is a technical/philosophical term. I've just looked up the definition to be sure I'm getting it right. It means "The results of an analysis are interpreted as complete in themselves, apart from any context." I'm just guessing as to the rest of it, but I can relate to feeling like I'm essentially flawed! Could he be saying that you believe your mental illness is the result of an "essential flaw" - something that's fundamentally wrong with you or your fault, rather than seeing your issues in context (maybe the result of abuse, biochemistry, or other aspects of your history)?

So, my idea is basically the same as incognito, and I'd agree that the only way to get a definite answer is to ask your T. Smiler I don't know you or your story, so I'm just throwing my best guess out there! I hope you get to the bottom of it. I would find it unnerving reading something like that!

Thanks so much for the response. Yes each of your interpretations now help his comment make sense. I was hung up on analytic fallacy. I couldn't figure out what he meant by that.

Yes I know I am wrong inside. I have been flawed since the day I was born. I try really hard but have never quite gotten to the point where I can truly just be happy with who I am. I'm really down this morning, sorry.

Thanks for helping me understand. And SP - love your attitude toward Pdoc's choice of words!
