Hi, everyone...some of us are reading the book, Healing Through the Dark Emotions by Miriam Greenspan, and thought it would be nice to have a place to discuss our thoughts and reflections of this wonderful book...grab a cup of coffee, and I'll bring the cake- come on in and sit down.. Who wants to go first?

BB, I edited to change the thread title when this was moved here to the book forum ~ AG

Thanks, STRM. It seems that those of us who have suffered with certain injuries have so yearned for someone to listen to us and to "hear" us. Carl Rogers was the one who stressed the importance of listening to the client and letting that client know how much the T is listening by his expressions and body language. He felt this was very important. Having someone walk with you through everything is what we need because the first time we had to endure it alone.

It seems to me that the books that resonate with most of us, stress the relationship with the T and how important and essential it is to healing our wounds.

I like this:

"Despair asks us to find meaning in the midst of apparent chaos or meaninglessness. Making meaning out of suffering is the basis for the human capacity to survive evil and transcend it."

"the purpose of these dark emotions (fear despair and grief) is evident when we can experience them mindfully, tolerate their intense energies, and let them be."

She talks a lot about our "emotion-phobic" culture that teaches us to suppress anything painful rather than just let it be. she says that this will "toxify" them. I find this idea really empowering. I tend to get sucked into my despair and expect the pain to just stop, or someone to make it stop- which keeps me really victimized to it, and dependent on others who may or may not be able to "make me feel better." I like the idea of being able to just let it be in me.

And yes- the idea of needing someone to hear and listen with us- that is so crucial to the whole thing.
