yup lol
Hi DaRock,
When you reexperience trauma, do you think any of it is from when you were drinking, like the actual experience of drinking?

that is so interesting liese.
im not sure exactly what you mean but in reading your question my gut answers yes. so let me see if i understand what youre getting at.
do you mean drinking excessively, being drunk, is a traumatic experience of sorts? and when you feel unglued or retraumatized in some way, some of the things you flash back to, so to speak, are traumatic in nature and may involve a time when you were drinking excessively?
my answer is yes. and that is a BIG yes.i think some of the times i experienced trauma was from being on drugs or alcohol. and i dont mean i was harmed by others during that time. i mean the experience itself felt really scary and out of control.

Yes, DaRock, you explained it much better than I could have. I have that experience as well - just the way you describe it.
people dont talk about that as being something that can mess you up. but it is.
the most traumatic thing that i did in that realm was take LSD. i did it a few times and it was fine and even fun. and then the last time i did it...oh boy. still recovering from that one.
but i can recall a number of drinking episodes that were frightening. i think generally anything that makes one feel trapped can overload the nervous system.

Liese,
I have addiction problems. I was addicted to meth for several years and yes, the experience itself (as DaRock explained it) was traumatizing. I often, even now, have certain flashes back to my drug use time. It doesn't have to be a specific thing that happened to me necesarrily...it's more just a flash of the immense addiction and who I was and what I did during that time that is traumatizing to remember.

It makes sense, Kmay, doesn't it?
Yes it does...I never really thought about it like that before...
yeah being an addict or alcoholic is a brutal thing to live through.
its not like shopping or twinkies...youre watching yourself destroy yourself helplessly.
although those are destructive too.

The ultimate loss of control. I never thought of it like that before. Being victimized by the alcohol but that's what it was like for me.
