Errr; yeah! Basically.

There was an old saying where we lived when I was a kid that went "If you can see the trees on the top of the hill, it's going to rain; and if you can't see them, then it's already raining"!! That's always stuck in my mind for some reason.

When you put it like that... no wonder we spend all our time talking about the weather.

In principle, yes. In reality, the thread can just go on and on and on until it finally dies a natural death (that is, when people stop posting) by which time no-one cares whether they're the winner or not.
