After being dumped by old T 9 weeks ago now; I have managed to find myself another T and have had three sessions already.

She is very keen to try using sensorimotor psychotherapy with me, and I was wondering if anyone here has had experience of it before. I'd never heard of it and have googled it to get an idea of the basics, but I'd be interested to know how it actually works in session and how sucessful it is/was. So far; all we've done are some breathing exercises and had a talk about the 'window of tolerance'.

One thing's for sure; this new 'bottom up' (brainwise) way of working will be very different to the 'top down' CBT type stuff I've been used to; and reading the book new T recommended - A General Theory of Love - (highly recommended btw) answers a number doubts I had as to the benefits of the pure CBT approach old T had.

Yo AV! Great news about finding a new T! I was wondering how you were doing.

I don't know anything about sensorimotor therapy, but hopefully someone will drop in soon who can help more with that. I love "A General Theory of Love" and hate CBT. Er, hate is a strong word. I feel it can be a useful technique for targeting specific issues, but that it's weak and limited as an overall approach.

Hope this new therapy goes well for you. Keep us posted!
I'm a little bit familiar with Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. It bears some resemblance to Somatic Experiencing which is what my T specializes in. They are both body-centered therapies that work from the level of body sensations and physical movements. How exactly it might look in session probably depends on the individual T as well as your own comfort level and what you are trying to work on, but it will generally involve tracking and describing what you feel in your body, and very possibly being asked to try something new in terms of posture, breath, or movement.
(((HiC))) (((SP - love the new avatar btw!!))) (((Liese))) (((BLT))) Thank you for your thoughts and comments.

I saw new T again this evening and she threw me a really nice curve ball. Last session she said she'd look out a CD for me of breathing exercises and relaxation techniques; which this week she duly gave me - to keep!! Getting home and putting the CD on; what do I find? It's only new T herself speaking on the CD Big Grin So I have a CD with new T's voice on - for keeps!! Who's a happy muppet then Big Grin
