Hey Lovely Friends,

My full time job is- Special Education Teacher. I am asking for help. Usually I teach children classified as 'Learning Disabled', but now a student is being placed in my room diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder. Just researching this is a bit triggering for me, so I had to stop. Obviously, my work knows nothing of my situation (mild PTSD diagnosis). Can anyone help me with this? What can I do?
My first mission is to find a plastic Water Buffalo for him... a long story. By the way he is 10 years old.

Thanks Liese and FOT, Yes to consistancy and warmth.
FOT- your words of wisdom and experience are most welcome.
This little boy was very traumatised- mom died of cancer when he was little, and there were all sorts of trauma before that- very rough father. He acts out and he steals. He seems to respond to kind logical words and explanations, but emotional displays of warmth- not so much.
Thanks!
Mt daughter, 13, has RAD. she's been with me since she was 7 and has healed a lot, but many things trigger her still, especially at home with me. In elementary school I had to inform the teachers of RAD since most do not know about this diagnosis. It helped that she went to the school where I taught and I could always know what was going on. As his teacher, you should check out radkids.org or attachment.org ~ there's a lot of useful information for teachers on both website. Good luck!
Oh, and Mayo I was going to add that with the help and willingness of most of her teachers to learn about RAD and implement appropriate praise and consequences, my Sped daughter who had been retained in first grade when I got her is now in gifted and talented classes in 7th grade and is a model student! Teachers can make a huge difference in the lives of these kids and I bet you will too!
