If any of you are interested in how to end therapy on a constructive and positive note, and especially the therapist's thoughts and responsibilities, I recommend Denise D. Davis's book, Terminating Therapy: A Professional Guide to Ending on a Positive Note.

This book is written primarily for psychotherapists, not for clients, although there is a short chapter specifically for clients. However, it's quite easy to read and, at times, gripping. You can get really good insight about the types of issues that psychotherapists run into with termination, the variety of client needs, and therapists' worries. If you are considering wrapping up your therapy, this book might help you to get more out of that ending.

Thank you, Cookie!

Actually, I read the book after ending my own therapy with my quite wonderful therapist. I happened to just finish the book on the day that my daughter's therapist terminated her therapy. This book doesn't really deal with abrupt terminations like that, as it's about how to handle difficult terminations, how to terminate well, and so on. But after reading the book, I realized that I might have handled my last therapy session a little differently, for my benefit. I wish I'd read it in advance.
