How would you feel about your therapist using botox? I started seeing someone new (for occasional back-up - like, once a month or so) and I'm pretty sure...

She seems nice, but man... don't you need those muscles? Isn't your expressive face part of your job?

I find it very odd. And distracting. There's no polite way to ask about this, right?

Bah.

Jones,
Hug two Good to hear from you!

To be very honest, I'd find it pretty problematic on two fronts. The first would be exactly what you said, I have enough trouble taking in my therapist's care without freezing their facial expressions. And, being the judgmental person I am, I would be thinking terrible things about their not accepting aging graciously and being too concerned about appearance.

And then I read BG's comment about migraine's and realized I can be too quick to judgement. Big Grin

But yeah, it would bother me and I agree with BG that bringing it up, while awkward, is ok. Therapy is all about awkwardness. Smiler

Cat, wow I would be floored by my Ts refusal to skip the makeup once for her patients. Smiler I guess they are human after all, eh?

Ohh, I miss you guys too. Hugs all round for us.

Popsy! Hug two she can smile, it's just across her forehead and on the outsides of her eyes - her face just sort of sits there! The thing is, I had been watching The Hobbit the night before, and [WARNING FOR LOTR/HOBBIT FANS DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS SENTENCE] spent the whole time complaining about the dwarves being on the botox, so suddenly I was super sensitive to it, and then the next day there it was again!

I started out wondering if she'd had a stroke or something, but it's totally even and smooth, so I figure there's only one good explanation. I like your strategy... "So this is what they call a blank slate, huh?"

BG good thinking on the migraines. Maybe I'll just imagine it's that.... I don't wanna ask brave questions any more! I just want a freaking therapist who can just be NORMAL and sort of invisible and NOT BUG ME so I can go in and pretend they're not there every now and then! I guess the cheaper solution would be STOP GOING TO THERAPY. Big Grin

Catalyst ((((kittycat)))) Nope, not much expression there - I mean, plenty in her eyes and mouth, but it just... doesn't go any further. It's made me really think about how much I move my eyebrows and forehead to express myself... thank you forehead muscles!!! But I like hearing about T2's crazy stuff - like, maybe it's just a different normal. My beloved husband pointed out to me that she probably looks at me and thinks I'm 'not looking after myself' because I'm a little... ungroomed by some standards (don't wear makeup or jewelry, occasional toothpaste smear on a bad day).

(((((Aggers)))) yep, I've been having all those judgements... and some! I know some women do it because they 'don't want to look angry' but you know... people's faces move when they talk! And you get the range of their expression from that! And there's a place for anger and the history of our faces! so - dammit, back in judgement town.

Migraines. Could be migraines.

Love to all.

Jones,
I just have to say that gave me a good (and much needed) laugh!

An old co-worker of mine got botox once (not for migraines Smiler ) and she came to work looking like Marge Simpson. She could only blink her eyes as far as expressions go. I wanted so badly to tell her that she is not allowed to come to work like that...

Hi (((Jones))), maybe casually drop into the conversation that you've be troubled by migraines recently and nothing seems to help - and see what she says (or see if her forehead moves in sympathy Wink)

Not nice to have a very blank face - it would bother me too Hug two

ps - anybody here NOT secretly trying to picture Jones' T's face? Wink
Interesting post! I was just thinking this type of thing the other day oddly enough.

I'm sorry to hear that you are distracted by your T's apparent use of Botox. I would think the lack of facial expressions would be odd. Hmmmm....I have no idea how you would bring it up except to talk about lack of facial expressions like someone else just said.

I was thinking of my former T the other day (as I do just about every day). I was thinking of how often her skin looked so young and glowing many days and other days she looked like her age. It was as if she was getting facial treatments or something. Maybe it was just different make up or different time of the day, so her make up was worn off or something. My former T was 56 and looked 46 at the most on the glowing days. I showed someone her picture that I found that was only a few months old and they said that she was no way 56, but I knew she was.

Anyway, I wish you all the best, Jones, discussing the facial stuff w/your T.
