If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now -- when?" -- Hillel

"If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, 'thank you,' that would suffice." -- Meister Eckhart

"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards." -- Unknown

"The shell must break before the bird can fly." -- Tennyson

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -- Marianne Williamson

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. The whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: 'Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.'"

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." ~A. Redmoon
Liese, as promised here are some important quotes, many of which are relevant to therapy. I'll let you all decide which ones...

"Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength."-- Author Unknown

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage."-- Lao Tse

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear."-- Ambrose Redmoon

"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."-- Maya Angelou

"It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else."-- Erma Bombeck

"My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return." -- Maya Angelou

"The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned."--Maya Angelou

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."--Maya Angelou

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."--Maya Angelou

As you may notice, Maya Angelou is a favorite of mine. Her quotes are wonderful. Someone I loved gave me the quotes and I thought it was time to share some of them.

TN
TN, Thanks for sharing those quotes. Smiler They are all beautiful but the two below really struck home for me:

quote:

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear."-- Ambrose Redmoon

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."--Maya Angelou

TN

Well, the first quote is particularly relevant to me right now because I have to move ahead and find a job despite great fear on my part. If it wasn't for my kids, I might give up. But taking care of them is greater than my fear. And so I am pushing myself forward anyway, despite the fact that I think I am going to fall flat on my face. That quote reminds me that it's okay to be afraid.

The second quote is just simply beautiful. At first, I put a positive spin on it and thought about someone showing their vulnerability. But it could also be taken as a warning and I thought of all of us, who struggle with trust issues. Believe someone the first time when they show you something dubious about their character. Or is that too cynical? I like it the way it struck me the first time. Wink
quote:

Thanks, Liese.

What was interesting about the above quote is that I was watching Oprah's new Life Class yesterday and she was talking about that quote a lot (she is very close with Maya Angelou) and how it relates to keeping yourself safe from those who would want to harm you or who would be better avoided in your life. She stressed listening to your own intuition and your own gut feelings. If someone shows you who they are then you need to pay attention. If they show you by their actions that they are not a good person....then BELIEVE IT.

I think what most of us do (or those with trauma and abuse backgrounds) is that we question our own perceptions. We don't trust ourselves. And we give people a lot of chances hoping that they are really good.

I wish I had paid attention to was oldT was showing me. It would have saved me a lot of pain and grief. Hopefully, I've learned something since then.

Hugs,
TN
TN,

Thanks for sharing Oprahs take on that quote. It's interesting to me that I saw a more positive spin first and thought I was being too cynical with the second interpretation, which is actually how it's meant.

You DID learn a lot through your relationship with OldT. And next time you will pay attention to those cues. You know what to look for now. The good and the bad of that relationship will be a part of you forever. It has changed who you are and who you will become. In the end, that experience will make you stronger. It will also make you more compassionate. Not that you already aren't compassionate. But it will make you even more compassionate, understanding and loving, especially in dealing with others. I know you would never treat someone the way OldT treated you. It has even had an impact on me and I've never met you or OldT. My heart aches when I think of how much pain you were in and have been in. Maybe all because OldT lacked compassion? I don't know what he lacked. But compassion might have been a huge part of it.
